Brief History

The Harare Ramachandra temple is so called due to large number of panels depicting Ramayana scenes on the walls of the temple as well as on the inner face of the north prakara. It is in close proximity to the royal palace. According to inscriptions the temple was in existence ina modest from the time of Devaraya(1406-22 C.E) and later on extensive additions were made. It was primarily built for exclusive use of the royal familyas it is evident from the location as well as from the southern entrance with protected passage which directly leads to the royal enclosure. This modest complex is enclosed by a decorated high prakara wall having gateways on the east is and north, besides a private entrance in the south .the main east facing temple is dedicated to Ramachandra the incarnation (avatara) of Vishnu. On plan, it has a garbhagriha, sukanasi, sabhamandapa and an open pillared mukhamandapa in the east is evidently a later addition. There are two ornate side entrances to the sabhamandapa having four carved and polished black stone pillars .Over the garbhagriha there is atritala Dravida vimana with a
suksnasi built on the orders of Ramaraja in 1521 C.E during the rule of Krishnadevaraya is located within this enclosure. Most interesting narrationas is an organized presentation of the entire story of Ramayana in 108 panels in three rows on the walls of the sbhamandapa. Rows o elephants in various moods, horses, infantry, dancing girls in traditional dance postures and scenes from Krishna-lila decorate the exterior surface of the prakara wall on the east, north and west.

Basement of King’s Audience Hall

Approach: Airport: Bengaluru ,  Railway Station: Hosapete , Bus Station:Kamalapura
Brief History
This large structure is about 137 meters to the west of the Mahanavamdibba. Adbu’r-RAzzaq states that it was the loftiest building in the Citadel. Vestiges of pillar sockets and bases show that it was originally a hall of hundred pillars. It faces north, on which side two large flights of steps at the eastern and western extremities lead up to the top of the platform. A shorter central flight of steps with a coiled ( surul) balustrade in green chlorite having lotus medallions, leads to an intermediate platform which runs round three sides. The southern side of this platform has a staircase rising from the ground level to a height of about 4.5 meters above the floor level of the platform. On the western side a similar staircase seems to have existed through an annexe on that side, and very likely these staircases were used by the Zanana women to gain access to the top storey of the audience hall to witness the Dasara festivities and other entertainments. The eastern side of the platform almost abuts the entrance to the palace enclosure. The general style of the King’s audience hall suggests for an earlier date than the majority of the exposed buildings in the Citadel area. There is a paved courtyard at the south-east corner where probably the homa was performed during the festivities. A row of pillar bases is found on its southern side and a little further away on the west is a square moulded base which probably was a shrine. Remains of a colonnade extend from its east face almost upto the underground chamber and probably formed part of a larger structure. This structure was known as Bhuvana Vijaya in contemporary literature. The remains of a stone aqueduct near the Throne platform show that they formed a part of an elaborate system of channels laid out in Vijayanagara for the supply of water to the Citadel. The aqueduct consists of long and deep stone channels made up of lengths of open stone conducts placed end to end and raised above ground level by means of tall square pillars. Similar remnants of aqueducts may be seen all over the city. Water was perhaps raised to the height of the conduits from well, tank or the river. In front of the Audience hall is a large enclosure running from that end right up to the Mahanavami dibba. It was in this enclosure that all the public festivities seem to have taken place during the Dasara and other important occasions. In front of the Audience halls the arena, a large paved court, whereon dancers, jugglers and wrestlers and other such people made their performances and the chieftains and nobles came to pay their tributes. On the ground, opposite the Mahanavami dibba, were held religious functions, connected with the festivities. It was here that the state horses and state elephants and other royal paraphernalia were offered for worship by the king, the royal maids and the priests. The intervening space was filled with many decorated pavilions and platforms erected for the occasion by the chiefs and captains. Near this place is a large stone trough 12.5 meters long, cut out of a single block of granite.
Located to the north-west of Royal Enclosure, an imposing rectangular basement raises in three tiers with the northern end opening into the street with a guarded enclosure. The southern end of the platform has a flight of steps from a palace complex leading to the first storey from the inner quarters of the royal enclosure. At eastern side a guarded flight of steps leads to the hundred pillared hall and the western end of this hall has a gallery for noblemen and women with a flight of steps at north.

Brief History
To the west of the Sarasvati temple and to the south of Pattanada Yallamma temple there is a massive stone basement called the Dasaradibba or Mahanavamidibba, since it played a prominent part during the celebrations of the nine day Navaratri festival. This structure was the hub of cultural activities and ceremonies conducted during the Dasara festivals, a vivid description of which is given by the contemporary travellers. This pyramidal structure built of granite stone blocks, in three tiers had a superstructure of perishable material rising to a height of seven storeys. The platform is accessible through flights of steps provided on three sides. The recent excavation has revealed that this structure was constructed in three phases. The recent work at the top of platform
was laid bare the plan of a large central bay with colonnades (indicated by pillar bases) and with many pillared chambers. The extant remains consist of a massive square granite faced base in three diminishing tiers, the lowest being 40 meter square and the top most 24 meter square. The walls of the tiers are covered with rows of boldly carved horizontal freezes of horses, elephants, warriors, dancers, musicians, etc. Parts of the western side are faced with dark green chlorite with sculptures of subsequent period and casing over the earlier granite freezes. Owing
to the nature of the stone these carvings here are fine and better finished. It is about 12 meters high up to the floor of the topmost platform. On the west side are steps. It was from this side that the king ascended the platform during the festivities connected with the Dasara. On the eastern side is a small chamber projecting from the platform. Access to the chamber is by means of two flight of steps on the north and south located on the floor of the platform itself. The walls of this chamber contain many freezes and panels including figures of animals and clowns. A group of people here with plaited hair, conical caps and swords, represents probably members of a Chinese embassy sent to the Vijayanagara court. Some of the carvings in the Dibba depict foreign representatives like Arab horse dealers and exotic animals. The freezes are noteworthy as they depict contemporary social life. An interesting relic near the north face of the Dibba
is a huge monolithic stone door (3.3 * 0.9 meter) faithfully imitating the wooden original in all details including even bolt-sockets. It is not known where it existed originally.

Brief History
Stone Aqueduct is located at a distance of 150 meter, south-west of the Mahanavami Dibba (Throne Platform). The stone aqueduct in the Royal Enclosure is a testimony the hydraulic system developed by the Vijayanagara architects. This stone aqueduct located near a well, has a system of overhead and subterranean water channels crisscrossing all over the Royal Enclosure area, feeding water into a large number of rectangular, square and ‘T’ shaped tanks at different levels with proper gradients near the structures within and beyond the Enclosure. The stone aqueducts are made of huge granite blocks measuring well over 5 meters in length and a height of 35 cm and width of 55 cm. However, the inner side of the cut channel has a width of 30 cm and depth of 20 cm. At
present, much of the disturbed stone aqueduct system measured (before restoration) nearly 37.73 m in east-west orientation with an arm of 7 meter towards south. The recent excavations have exposed the eastern arm of the above aqueduct to a total length of 98.70 meters which takes a right-angle turn over an enclosure wall to a distance of 80.90 meters before emptying itself into the public bath. The small square chamber, to the north-west of the palace base, is below ground level and is entirely of green chlorite. It has a narrow covered pillared aisle running all along the four sides. The pillars are of an early
cubical type. In the middle of the chamber are remnants of four pillar bases. The exact nature and purpose of this structure are not known at present, but very likely it may have been a shrine alluded to by Peas. A large green chlorite yali balustrade with steps and a large green chlorite image of Venugopala (1.5 meter in height) somewhat mutilated were recently found near this place.
