Brief History:
This temple was built during the reign of Achyutadevaraya (1530-42 C.E.) enshrining the deity called Tiruvengalanatha, according to an inscription. The temple complex faces north. It has two prakaras; the outer one has lofty gopura on the north, while the inner one has three gopuras, on the east, west and north. Pillared corridors run along the interior of both prakara walls. The large kalyanamandapas to the west of the two north gopuras are
much dilapidated. The inner courtyard contains the sanctum sanctorum of the god and goddess. Attachedto the god’s sanctum are an antarala, sabhamandapa and a large and ornate maha- mandapa in the typical Vijayanagara style. There is also the characteristic covered pradakshina prakara around the garbhagriha and antarala. The superstructure of the sanctum is much dilapidated and the upper portions are not extant. The Amman shrine, to garbhagriha, antarala and a pillared the south-west of the god’s sanctum has a sabhamandapa having the characteristic feature of a subsidiary shrine facing east.

Brief History:
This gateway through the fortification is located on the way to Talarighatta from Kamalapura. In an inscription it is mentioned as Aresankara bagilu. It has a north-south passage way flanked by a seven pillared mandapa (pavilion) on each side. To the north there is a small enclosure. The northern facade of the gateway is two-storied structure and plastered in the Islamic style. The lower storey consists of three arched recesses in
rectangular frames. The arches are in two planes and have foliage medallions in the spandrels and similar designs at the apex. The central arch is completely pierced as a large opening; on either side the arches are partly filled to create smaller arched openings.
The wall is terminated by a frieze of alternating angled and curved elements. The upperstorey repeats this basic scheme at a slightly reduced scale. The central arched openings is flanked by two tiers of smaller arched recesses; the upper recesses (missing on the right)are pierced as small windows. The larger arched openings at the side have now mostly Brahma collapsed. The wall is terminated by a stepped base. The colonnade flanking the passage seated way is raised on a moulded basement. The pillars are provided with bases and the shafts four-are crudely cut. Angles support a small upper chamber roofed with horizontal slabs.

This temple is located to the north-west of the Vitthala temple has a long inscription on its wallsstating that the temple of Tirumangai Alvar was builtby Ahubilaraju in 1554 C.E. The temple is facing east and on plan it has a garbhagriha, an antarala and sabhamandapa with two side porches in north and ends) and south, with a doorway on the east and two small entrances in the west wall for the sake sikharas. of circumambulation (pradakshina) around antarala and garbhagriha. The ceiling of the sabhamandapa has an elaborately carved lotus. The pillars are of ornate cubical Vijayanagara type with usual bas reliefs. The temple has a moulded adhishthana. It has a ruined prakara wall and a ruined mandapa attached to the interior of the prakara at its of the south-eastern corner.

Parankusha Mandapa

Brief History:
This is an elaborately decorated mandapa situated about 1 km east of the Vitthala complex. Raised on a moulded adhishthana, it has nine bays of which the central one is occupied by raised platform. The ceiling of this platform is ornate having miniature sikhara with deities, miniature niches with devotees and an elaborately carved lotus. On the west side there is a porch having a flight of three steps with Yali balustrades. There is a brick superstructure of two tiers over the ceiling of the central bay. The brick parapet over the roof has many niches with remains of stucco figures.

Raghunatha Swami Temple

Brief History:
This temple is located on the Malyavanta hill and has a prakara with a large five storeyed gopura on the south and a small three storeyed gopura on the east. The gopuras lead to the open courtyard containing the Svami and Amman sanctum sanctorum, a Vijayanagara style kalyanamandapa in the south west corner and other mandapas. The main sanctum faces east and has usual side porches and garbhagriha and antarala enclosed by a covered prakara with plain exterior walls. The Svami sanctum has a tritala vimana with a circular sikhara. The garbhagriha and antarala walls are attached to the large natural boulder on which are carved seated images with kneeling Hanuman and standing Lakshmana, all cut almost in the round. The Amman shrine to the left of the main sanctum has a tritala vimana with salasikhara oriented north-south. The ardhamandapa of the Amman shrine has a two storeyed sub shrine facing south and roofed by a sala sikahara oriented east-west.

Brief History:
This north facing Vaishnava temple is raised on a granite outcrop. Earlier this temple was identified as a Jaina temple by A.H. Longhurst and as a Ramais garbhagriha, mukhamandapa temple by Devakunjari. According to an inscription, it was built for god Narasimha in about 1386 C.E. by a merchant named Hiriya Timmasetti and was later developed into a complex with two other small shrines added on the east and south-west.
This is the earliest dated Narasimha temple of Vijayanagara city. It has a plain exterior except for relief carvings of Garuda, Hanuman, elephant and a band of scroll design. An outstanding feature of this temple is its stepped pyramidal tower (Kadambanagara sikhara) having recessed horizontal mouldings and sukanasa projection over garbhagriha and antarala. This complex is surrounded by a prakara wall having on the west, a porch garbhagriha. to the gateway with with a flight of 18 steps and on the east an open two-storeyed gateway reached by 33 steps.

This north facing Vaishnava temple is raised on a granite outcrop. Earlier this temple was identified as a Jaina temple by A.H. Two storied Mandapa

Brief History:
This huge two-storied mandapa (double- storied gateway) is situated south-west of the Vittala temple near the Tungabhadra river. It israised on a grand sheet rock close to the fortificationwall. The gateway passes through a pathway leading to Hampi from the Vitthala temple. It’s adhishthana is high with five plain mouldings. All the pillars are plain at its south side; this monument is flanked by two-small single celled shrines, while nearby are several other shrines.

Vishnu Temple No. I

Brief History:
This temple is facing north and it is built on a high platform. On plan it consists of a garbhagriha, an antarala, a covered pradakshinapatha around the garbhagriha and a sabhamandapa in the front. The rear wall of the garbhagriha is a huge boulder on which a beautiful sculpture of Anantasayana lying on Adisesha with seven hooded canopy, with Sridevi and Bhudevi at his legs and Brahma seated on a lotus projecting from his navel are carved in relief. Bas-reliefs of a seated Vaishnava saint in anjalimudra, a seated royal figure in dhyanamudra and a seated four- handed Vishnu are carved on the inner face of the antarala walls. Figures of Hanuman and Garuda, both standing in anjalimudra are carved on the pilasters flanking the antarala entrance. The pillars of the
sabhamandapa are simple without any bas-relief.

Brief History:
This temple is located near Vishnu temple No.1. It is a temple facing north, having on plan garbhagriha, an antarala and an open mukhamandapa in front. The garbhagriha houses a rectangular pedestal carved with Garuda and two fragments of a black stone sculpture. There is a ruined brick superstructure over the garbhagriha. There are traces of a prakara wall around the temple with a ruined gateway to the north. The door-jambs of the entrance leading to the lintel of the antarala and the gateway bear Vaishnava dvarapalas. The lintel of the entrance to the antarala is depicted with Gajalakshmi. The pillars of mukha-mandapa are adorned with the usual bas reliefs
of deities.

Brief History:
This is located near the south gopura of the front to Vitthala complex. It is identified by some scholars asRama Vitthala temple and is datable to the sixteenth garbhagriha, enclosing sabhamandapa century C.E. An image of Purandaradasa, a Viashnava saint, has been installed here a few years back. This temple, facing north, has on plan, a garbhagriha, an antarala and a sabhamandapa with two porches on the east and west and the main entrance in the north. The main entrance and the western porch have flights western a raised of steps with elephant balustrades. The ceiling of the central bay of the sabhamandapa has elaborately carved lotus. The exterior wall of the temple
is adorned with devakoshthas, kumbha pilasters and a few bas-reliefs.

Vittala Temple

Brief History:
The Vittala temple represents the highest achievement of the Vijayanagara style of art and architecture. Though the core of the temple was in existence from the times of Devaraya II (1422-46 C.E.) a substantial portion of the present structure was added under the patronage of Krishnadevaraya (1509-1529 C.E.). This temple remained under worship till 1565 C.E. The temple is built with a spacious courtyard within a walled enclosure with three massive gateways adorned by lofty gopuras in the north, east and south. In the courtyard are located the main shrine, Devi shrine, kalyanamandapa, utsavamandapa, a hundred pillared mandapa and a stone ratha. The main temple, facing east, dedicated to Vitthala, a form of Vishnu, consists of a garbhagriha, an antarala with covered pradakshinapatha, a closed sabhamandapa and an open pillared mukhamandapa of cruciform plan. The walls of the shrine and sabhamandapa have ornamental pilasters and deep niches alternately. The superstructure above the shrine is of brick forming a tritala Dravida vimana. The composite pillars of the mukhamandapa have rearing animals and clusters of slender pillars, each hewn out of a single granite block. The kalyanamandapa is as ornate as the mahamandapa with an elevated moulded dais located at the centre of the mandapa to perform the marriage northern ceremony of the god and goddess. The stone chariot in front of the mahamandapa, provided with a brick superstructure is a reproduction of a processional chariot in wood, with wheels realistically fitted as it could revolve around the axis. This structure is actually a shrine of Garuda. This complex had towards east a bazar with paved broad road flanked by pillared mandapa on either side and there is a rectangular tank towards the eastern end known as Lokapavani with a string of pillared pavilions around.

Brief History:
It is located to the south-east of the Vilthala temple and is said to be a structure meant for the Tulapurusha dana, i.e. weighing the king against Vitthala stating by sabhamandapa precious gems and metals during auspicious occasion like coronation. It consists of two lofty carved granite pillars supporting a stone beam provided with three loop-holes on the underside (one in the middle and the other two on either ends) and three miniature sikharas on the upper side. On either side of this are two kuta sikharas. The two pillars, each erected on a pitha are carved with kumbha pilasters. The pitha of the east pillar has a bas relief depicting a king and two queens standing in anjalimudra.

Vishanava Temple

Brief History:
It is a Vishnu temple facing south with a bazaar in front flanked by colonnades. This temple is datable to sixteenth century C.E. and on plan it has a garbhagriha, an antarala, a pradakshinapatha enclosing the garbhagriha and antarala, a sabhamandapa with two side porches, of which the western one is converted into a cell. An ornate mahamandapa with composite pillars has west flights a raised roof over the central aisle. The ceiling of the
ardhamandapa has an elaborately mandapa carved lotus and other panels. The temple has a high adhishtana comprising of seven with ornate mouldings. The temple is surrounded by a high prakara wall with an ornate gopura.to the south. There is a pillared pavilion alongthe inner side of the prakara wall. There arepanels depicting the story of Ramayana on the gopura.

Brief History:
This is an ornate but incomplete gopura to the north of King’s Balance and to the south-west of the Vitthala temple. It has four ornate lofty pillars forming its door-jambs. These doorjambs are carved with basreliefs of Hanuman, Garuda, an Apsara standing on a makara and a scroll design issuing from the mouth of makara. Ornate mouldings are seen on the southern and northern sides of the basement, of which the lower moulding is
depicted with a frieze of horses. Other bas reliefs carved on the basement depict vyala, Balakrishna, Vishnu, Vitthala, Narasimha and musicians. There are two standing composite pillars between the door jambs sculptured with rampant lions with riders, below which are miniature sikhara motifs.
